Note

Special Note:

This table enables users to focus on specific ethnic groups or categories. This table cannot be used to calculate the ethnic distribution of the population. To calculate the ethnic distribution of the population, please refer to Table 93F0026XDB96002.

This table shows the number of respondents who provided single or multiple responses for each ethnic group and category. The total number of respondents providing each ethnic group and category is also shown.

Respondents who reported one ethnic origin are included in the single response column. Respondents who reported more than one ethnic origin are included in the multiple response column for each ethnic group or category they reported. The total response column indicates the number of respondents who reported each ethnic origin.

Users should be careful when interpreting multiple response counts because respondents who reported more than one ethnic origin are counted in the multiple response column for each ethnic origin they reported.

In addition to presenting the number of respondents who provided single and multiple responses for each ethnic group, this table shows the total number of respondents who provided single and multiple responses within each ethnic category. This enables users to obtain a count for each ethnic category and avoid the problem of double counting within categories. A respondent giving the ethnic origin combination of 'Chinese and Vietnamese' is included in the multiple response column for both 'Chinese' and 'Vietnamese'. However, this respondent is counted only once in the multiple response column for 'East and Southeast Asian origins'.

Although this table enables users to obtain a count for each ethnic category, respondents who provided multiple responses in ethnic groups which are included in more than one ethnic category are counted in each of the ethnic categories. For example, a respondent giving the ethnic origin 'French and Vietnamese' is included in the multiple response column for both the 'French' and 'Vietnamese' ethnic groups. This respondent is also counted in the multiple response column for the 'French origins' category and the 'East and Southeast Asian origins' category.

The abbreviation 'n.i.e.' means 'not included elsewhere'. It is used to denote a residual ethnic grouping which contains either a very general ethnic response or several ethnic origins not included as separate groups within an ethnic category. For example, the group 'African (Black), n.i.e.' includes responses such as 'African', 'African Black', 'West African', 'Senegalese', 'Zimbabwean', 'Bantu', 'Zulu', etc.

Comparability of ethnic origin data between the 1996 Census and previous censuses has been affected by several factors, including changes in the question format, wording, examples (such as 'Canadian'), instructions and data processing, as well as by the social environment at the time of the census. The 1996 Census required that respondents write in their ethnic origin(s) on four write-in lines, whereas previous censuses provided the respondent with both mark-in categories and write-in lines.

For more information on ethnic origin, including a comparison of ethnic origins in the 1996, 1991 and 1986 Censuses, please refer to the 'User Guide: Ethnic Origin' in the electronic documentation supplied with this product. (C:\Rec96cen\Document\English\Other\Ethnic.txt)
