Help with searching

Search

The 'Search' function allows you to type the name of virtually any community in Canada in the 'Place name search' box and obtain information on either the place entered or the municipality, county or metropolitan area in which it is located.

There are two options available for searching. The first is 'Place name begins with' and the second, 'Place name contains'. Note that both these methods of searching are not case sensitive, meaning that upper case and/or lower case letters can be used. Also, accented characters can be used.

Users can also search for a place by selecting the area from a list.

'Place name begins with'

The search will select all place names beginning with the characters entered. For example, if 'barrie' is entered, all place names whose name begins with 'Barrie' will be listed. An example of this is:

Place Name Begins with Barrie

'Place name contains'

If a search is done with 'tyr' with the 'Place name contains' button selected, all place names containing the letters 'tyr' will be listed regardless of where the string of letters is located in the place name. An example of this is:

Place Name Contains Tyr

Province or territory selection

It is possible, through the drop-down list (click on the arrow), to select a specific province or territory for the place name entered. If no selection is made, a search on 'All provinces and territories' will be performed.

Search and reset

Once the place name has been entered, either click on 'Search' or hit the return key to begin the search.
