Description for Figure 5.1

Figure 5.1 demonstrates the breakdown of immigrants, non-immigrants and non-permanent residents in Canada by place of birth and generation status. It broadly delineates these populations according to whether they were born inside or outside Canada. It then further delineates the population born inside or outside Canada by first, second or third generation or more.

The population in private households can be categorized in the following way:

  1. The non-immigrant population includes persons who are Canadian citizens by birth.
    1. The non-immigrant population born in Canada.
    2. The non-immigrant population born outside Canada.
  2. The immigrant population includes persons who are, or who have ever been, landed immigrants or permanent residents.
    1. The immigrant population born outside Canada.
    2. The immigrant population born in Canada.
  3. Non-permanent residents are part of the population born outside Canada. Non-permanent residents include persons from another country who have a work or study permit or who are refugee claimants, and their family members sharing the same permit and living in Canada with them.

The population born inside or outside Canada can be further delineated by generation status.

  1. First generation includes persons who were born outside Canada.
  2. Second generation includes persons who were born in Canada and had at least one parent born outside Canada.
  3. Third generation or more includes persons who were born in Canada with both parents born in Canada.
