What is the purpose of the 2021 Census of Population content consultation?

The online consultation questionnaire is designed to gather information about how and why Canadians use census data, the type of information they believe should be available from the census, and details of other data sources that could be used to supplement or replace current census content.

The information gathered during consultation will help Statistics Canada assess the data needs of Canadians and evaluate whether emerging social and economic trends are reflected. The feedback provided will help Statistics Canada determine the content of the 2021 Census of Population questionnaire.

When is Statistics Canada conducting the 2021 Census of Population content consultation?

The 2021 Census of Population content consultation will begin on September 11, 2017, and end on December 8, 2017.

The online questionnaire will be available 24 hours a day, except during scheduled maintenance.

How can I complete the 2021 Census of Population content consultation questionnaire?

As of September 11, 2017, the online questionnaire will be available on the Statistics Canada website at 2021 Census of Population Content Consultation.

The online questionnaire link will bring you directly to the consultation questionnaire. Please complete the questionnaire to provide your feedback on the 2021 Census of Population content and submit your comments to Statistics Canada by December 8, 2017.

Why have I been invited to participate in this consultation?

Invitations to participate have been emailed to individuals and organizations who are known census data users.

We appreciate your input and also encourage you to forward this invitation to colleagues who are census data users, as they may also want to provide their informed responses on behalf of your organization.

Statistics Canada will also reach out to the general public through its website and regional offices.

Comments collected during the consultation may be published anonymously in the 2021 Census of Population Content Consultation Report, which will be available on the Statistics Canada website in the fall of 2019.

Why have I been invited more than once to participate in this consultation?

The 2021 Census of Population content consultation runs from September 11, 2017, to December 8, 2017. During the consultation period, we will send out follow-up emails to encourage participation. If you have already received an invitation and have completed the online questionnaire, Statistics Canada thanks you for your participation.

Statistics Canada also encourages participants to forward the consultation information to any colleagues who are census data users.

Why am I being asked to forward the email invitation to others?

Statistics Canada aims to reach out to census data users to gain feedback on how they use census data and the type of information they believe should be available from the census. Statistics Canada is also seeking ideas for new or modified census content, as well as data sources that could be used to supplement or replace current content, to ensure that census information remains relevant for the people and organizations that use it.

By asking participants to forward information about the consultation to their colleagues, Statistics Canada hopes to reach additional census data users in order to gain their valuable feedback.

What are you going to do with the feedback from the 2021 Census of Population content consultation?

I do not have all the information required to answer the questions. Can I save the answers I've already entered and complete the questionnaire later?

A save feature is not available for this questionnaire, therefore you will need to complete and submit your questionnaire in one single session.

How much time is required to complete the online consultation questionnaire?

The time required to complete the consultation questionnaire will be different for every participant. Once you start to fill out the questionnaire, the progress bar in the top right corner will give you an indication of your completion status.

Please note that there is no option to save your questionnaire and continue later. You will need to complete and submit your questionnaire in one single session. Leaving your questionnaire inactive for more than two hours and/or closing your browser will terminate your session and the information you entered will be lost.

Can I print the questionnaire?

The option to print is not available for the 2021 Census of Population content consultation questionnaire. To provide your feedback you will need to complete the online questionnaire.

What happens to the completed questionnaire after I submit it?

Completed questionnaires are encrypted and sent directly to Statistics Canada. Encryption, or encoding, ensures that only Statistics Canada employees can access the files. The information from the questionnaires is then transferred to a separate Statistics Canada network that is not connected to any outside network. Only authorized Statistics Canada employees have access to the information from the questionnaires.

How do I know that you have received my online questionnaire?

Once you have submitted your online questionnaire, a confirmation code will appear on your screen, which indicates that Statistics Canada has received it.

Do I need to provide my contact information, such as my name, my address or my email address, in the consultation questionnaire?

Yes, Statistics Canada asks for your contact information since your responses may be grouped by municipality, region or organization.
