Sources of Income. All persons 15 years or over were asked to report their total money income from the following sources during the calendar year 1980:
(i) Wages and Salaries: These are gross wages and salaries before deductions for such items as income tax, pensions, unemployment insurance, etc. Included in this source are military pay and allowances, tips, commissions, bonuses and piece-rate payments, as well as occasional earnings in 1980. All income in kind such as free board and lodging is excluded.
(ii) Net Income from Non-farm Self-employment: This is net income (gross receipts minus expenses of operations including depreciation) received from own non-farm unincorporated business or from a professional practice during 1980. In the case of a partnership, only the respondent's share was to be included.
(iii) Net Income from Farm Self-employment: This is net income (gross receipts minus expenses of operations including depreciation) received from the operation of a farm, either on own account or in partnership, during 1980. In the case of a partnership, only the respondent's share of income was to be reported. Advance, supplementary or assistance payments to farmers by federal or provincial governments were to be included.
(iv) Old Age Pensions: These pensions include payments by the federal government on account of Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplements and Canada/Quebec Pension Plan benefits. Also included are Spouses' Allowances to 60 to 64 year-old spouses of Old Age Security recipients.
(v) Family Allowances: Federal as well as provincial allowances paid during 1980 in respect of children under 18 years of age are included. These allowances, though not collected directly from the respondents, were calculated and included in the income of one of the parents.
(vi) Unemployment Insurance Benefits: These are total unemployment insurance benefits, before income tax deductions, received in 1980.
(vii) Other Government Payments: These include all other government transfer payments from federal, provincial and municipal governments during 1980. Included are veterans' pensions and allowances, cash welfare payments, workers' compensation, Canada Manpower training and mobility allowances, mothers' allowances, pensions to widows, blind and disabled, etc. Provincial income supplements are also included in this source.
(viii) Investment Income: This source includes interest from deposits in banks, trust companies, co-operatives, credit unions, etc., bond and debenture interest, all dividends from both Canadian and foreign sources, net rents from real estate, mortgage and loan interest received, regular income from an estate or trust fund, and interest from insurance policies from Canadian and foreign sources.
(ix) Retirement Pensions and Other Money Income: This source includes all regular income received as a result of previous employment of the respondent or a deceased relative. It includes pensions to retired civil servants, RCMP or career military personnel, and all annuities regardless of who purchased them, but excludes lump sum payments. It also includes regular income received during 1980 and not reported in any of the other sources, e.g., alimony, child support, periodic support from persons not in the household, net income from roomers and boarders, non-investment income such as retirement pensions from abroad, scholarships, etc.

Receipts Not Counted as Income. Gambling gains and losses, money inherited during the year in a lump sum, capital gains or losses, receipts from the sale of property or personal belongings, income tax refunds, loans received, loans repaid to an individual as the lender, lump sum settlements of insurance policies, and rebates of property taxes and other taxes were excluded as well as all income in kind such as free meals, living accommodation, or food and fuel produced on own farm, Refundable tax credits (e.g., child tax credit), either provincial or federal, are also not included as income.

Total Income. Total income is the sum of amounts received during 1980 by an income recipient from the sources of income listed above.

Family/Household Total Income. The total income of a census family or household is the sum of the total incomes of the members of that family or household.

Average Income, The average family/household income refers to the weighted mean total income of families/households in 1980. Average income is calculated from unrounded data by dividing the aggregate income of a group of families/households by the number of families/households in that group. Similarly, the average income of a group of non-family persons is calculated from unrounded data by dividing the aggregate income of the group by the number of all non-family persons 15 years and over in the group whether or not they reported income. However, the average income of individuals 15 years and over is calculated for only those individuals who reported income for 1980.

Median Income. The median income of a group of families or non-family persons or households is the amount which divides the income size distribution of the group in two parts, one having incomes below the median and the other having incomes above the median. The median income of a group of individuals 15 years and over is the amount which divides the income size distribution of the individuals with income in that group into two equal parts.

Standard Error of Average Income. Refers to the estimated standard error of average income for an income size distribution (for total income, employment income, family income or household income). It is an estimate of the error introduced into these data due to the fact that they are collected only from a one in five random sample of households. When using these figures, the user can be reasonably certain that for the enumerated population, the true value (the value that would have been obtained had sampling not been used) lies within plus or minus twice the standard error and virtually certain that it lies within plus or minus three times the standard error. These estimates do not include the effects of certain types of response error or systematic or coverage errors.

Employment Income. Refers to total income received by persons 15 years of age and over during 1980 as wages and salaries, net income from non-farm self-employment and/or net farm income.

Average Employment Income. Refers to the weighted mean total employment income per unit of a particular group. Average employment income is calculated from unrounded data by dividing the aggregate employment income of the group by the number of units with employment income in that group.

Median Employment Income. Refers to the amount which divides the distribution of those members of a particular group with employment income by size of total employment income, in two equal parts, one having employment incomes below the median and the other having employment incomes above the median.

Economic Family. Refers to a group of two or more persons who live in the same dwelling and are related to each other by blood, marriage or adoption. Persons living common-law are considered, for census purposes, as now married regardless of their legal marital status; they accordingly appear as married couples in the economic family tables.

Incidence of Low Income. On the basis of the total income of a family unit adjusted for federal Child Tax Credit, size of the family unit and size of the area of residence, the position of each unattached individual and economic family is determined in relation to low income cut-offs based on the 1978 Family Expenditure Survey and updated by changes in the Consumer Price Index. The incidence of low income is the percentage of units below the low income cut-offs. The incidence rates in this table been calculated from unrounded data.
