Definition:

Immigration: Immigrant Population

Refers to people who are, or have been, landed immigrants in Canada. A landed immigrant is a person who has been granted the right to live in Canada permanently by immigration authorities. Some immigrants have resided in Canada for a number of years, while others are recent arrivals. Most immigrants are born outside Canada, but a small number were born in Canada.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Special Note:

A few of the census metropolitan areas (CMAs) have different geographic boundaries in 1996 than they had in 1986 and 1991. In order to facilitate data comparisons, the 1986 and 1991 CMA data have been adjusted to approximate as closely as possible the 1996 CMA boundaries.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Special Note:

For further information on the comparison of Places of Birth available in 1986, 1991 and 1996, please refer to the Appendices.

Palestine refers to pre-1948 British mandate Palestine. West Bank and Gaza Strip are the territories referred to in the Declaration of Principles, signed by Israel and the PLO in 1993. However, since responses to the census are self-reported, it is not clear that responses of 'Palestine', 'Gaza Strip' or 'West Bank' were in reference to these territories as defined. In 1986 and 1991, the responses 'Palestine', 'Gaza Strip' or 'West Bank' were coded to Israel, but in 1996, they were coded separately, as 'Palestine/West Bank/Gaza Strip'.
