Description

This figure illustrates the association between the period of construction of the dwelling of residence and the median commuting distance to get to work. The data shown are for workers who reside in census metropolitan areas. The figure shows that workers living in the more recently built dwellings of residence tend to travel farther to get to work. For dwellings built in 1920 or before, the median distance is 4.7 kilometres. This distance is 5.1 km for dwellings built between 1921 and 1945; 5.8 km for dwellings built between 1946 and 1960; 6.6 km for dwellings built between 1961 and 1970; 7.5 km for dwellings built between 1971 and 1980; 7.9 km for dwellings built between 1981 and 1985; 8.7 km for dwellings built between 1986 and 1990; 9.1 km for dwellings built between 1991 and 1995; 9.7 km for dwellings built between 1996 and 2000; and 10.8 km for those built between 2001 and 2006.
