The type indicates the municipal status of a census subdivision. Census subdivisions are classified into various types, according to official designations adopted by provincial or federal authorities. For a listing of CSD types, see Table 7 in the section on geography.

The CSD type of residence 5 years ago reflects the current 2006 Census boundaries and municipal status.

This variable will allow analysis of migration flows to and from CSDs of various types. For example, data on mobility and migration may be retrieved for Indian reserves, northern villages and hamlets.
