  • In 2016, the enumerated population of Nova Scotia was 923,598 which represents a change of 0.2% from 2011. This growth was lower than the national rate of 5.0%.
  • In 2016, there were 401,990 private dwellings occupied in Nova Scotia in 2016 which represent a change of 3.0% from 2011. This growth was lower than the national rate of 5.6%.
  • The land area of Nova Scotia is 52,942.27 square kilometres and the population density was 17.4 people per square kilometre.

Nova Scotia – Census metropolitan areas (CMAs), census agglomerations (CAs) and regions outside CMAs and CAs

In 2016, 65.9% of the population of Nova Scotia lived inside a census metropolitan area (CMA) or census agglomeration (CA). That represents 608,574 persons. This was lower than the national rate of 83.2%.

The number of persons living outside a census metropolitan area (CMA) or a census agglomeration (CA) was 315,024, which accounts for 34.1% of the population. This was higher than the national rate of 16.8%.
