The purpose of this video is to explain where to find and how to extract a profile of selected socio-demographic characteristics related to the Indigenous Peoples in the standard data products of the Census of Population website.

Welcome to the “Indigenous population profile” video.

This video is part of the video series on the Census of Population web pages.
The purpose of this video is to explain where to find and how to extract a profile of selected socio-demographic characteristics related to the Indigenous Peoples in the standard data products of the Census of Population website.
The easiest way to access the profiles related to the Indigenous population is to click on the “2021 Census Profile” link located underneath the search bar of the Census of Population home page.

Once on the Census Profile main page, scroll down to the “Related 2021 Profiles” subheading and click on the “Indigenous population profile, 2021 Census of Population” link.

This brings you to the Indigenous Population Profile main page.
This product presents comprehensive data from the Census of Population focusing on the Indigenous identity population and the Indigenous households of various geographic areas.
Indigenous population profiles are available for over 5,500 standard census geographies as well as various Indigenous geographies, including Métis settlements, Inuit regions, and First Nation or Indian band and Tribal Council areas.
To find a profile for a geography of interest, you can search by place name, postal code or geographic code. You can also browse a list of all geographies by province or territory, browse a map using GeoSearch or choose from popular places in Canada.

To obtain historical data on the Indigenous population, click on the links found under the “Indigenous Population Profiles from previous censuses” subtitle.

Indigenous data for private households in First Nations communities, Métis settlements, Inuit regions and other remote areas was collected using the long-form questionnaire (2A-R).
To see what one of these profiles looks like, we will now go back to the top of the Indigenous Population Profile main page. Browse a profile by geography by selecting Canada as our geographic region.

We will then have the option to select between two Indigenous profile tables. The first one is the population profile, which provides person level data.
The second one, the dwellings/households profile, provides data with a household/dwelling focus.
For our example, we will continue with “Population.”
As you can see, the table is comprehensive, including close to 1,000 lines of data.

To view a smaller subset, various filters are available at the top of the profile table. Depending on the geography you have chosen, the number of filters may vary. In our example, four filters are available.

We will now filter the information we are looking for.
Under “Topic” we will choose “Employment income statistics for earners”, under “Gender” we will keep “Total gender”, under “Age groups” we will select “25 years and over”, under “Residence on or off reserve” we will keep “Total - Residence on or off reserve” and will click on “Apply”.

You can now see that the size of the table has been reduced and only the specific data we are looking for is shown on this page.

If you go back to the top of the table, you will see three buttons located just beneath the title of the profile.

The first one is the “Data quality” button, that will show you the data quality indicators for the selected geography, including the total non-response rates for the short-form and long-form census questionnaires.

The second one is the “Map” button, which will show you precisely on a map your chosen geography. Please note that this “Map” button is not available for all geographies.

The third one is the “Related data” button, which presents a list of the other 2021 Census data products related to your chosen geography. Please note that this “Related data” button is not available for all geographies.

Before concluding this video, two more items located at the top right of the Indigenous Population Profile main page are worth mentioning.
The first one is the “Download data” button, which can download Population and Dwellings/Households Indigenous population profile tables for multiple geographic levels and in three different download formats, which are CSV, TAB, and IVT.
