 Highlights

• The Canadian population grew more rapidly between 2001 and 2006 (+5.4%) than in the previous intercensal period (+4.0%).

• Canada had a higher rate of population growth (+5.4%) than any other G8 country between 2001 and 2006.
• Between 2001 and 2006, the vast majority of Canada’s population growth took place in census metropolitan areas.

 Corrections and updates

After the release of the population and dwelling counts, errors are occasionally uncovered in the data. It is not possible to make changes to the 2006 Census data presented in these tables. However, to obtain the population and dwelling count amendments for census subdivisions (CSD) and other levels of geography, see the corrections and updates.

 Postcensal population estimates

Please note that the most appropriate 2006 population figures for Canada, provinces and territories are the current postcensal population estimates.
