Description

Figure 1: Aboriginal identity population (2006 Census counts) Figure 1 depicts Aboriginal identity counts from the 2006 Census. The Aboriginal identity (derived population) count of 1,172,790 is shown to be the summation of (1) Single Aboriginal identity responses (North American Indian 698,025 + Métis 389,780 + Inuit 50,480) and (2) Multiple Aboriginal identity responses (7,740) and (3) Other responses (individuals who identified themselves as Treaty/Registered Indians and/or band members without identifying themselves as North American Indian, Métis or Inuit in the Aboriginal identity question) (26,760). The Single Aboriginal identity responses and the Multiple Aboriginal identity responses are shown to sum up to the Aboriginal identity (single question) population (1,138,285). Figure 1 also depicts the Aboriginal identity (derived) population as the summation of the Aboriginal (single question) population and the Other responses.
