Figure 5
Ratio of the number of people aged 15 to 24 and those aged 55 to 64, Canada, 1921 to 2011

Description

This figure shows the changes in the ratio of the number of people about to enter the labour force (those aged 15 to 24) on the number of people about to leave it (those aged 55 to 64) in Canada from 1921 to 2011. It indicates that the ratio has been decreasing since 1971. In 1921, there were 2.91 people about to enter the labour market for every person about to leave it, in 1931, there were 2.95, in 1941, 2.35, in 1951, 1.99, in 1961, 2.03, in 1971, 2.31, in 1981, 2.16, in 1991, 1.60, and in 2001, 1.40. In 2011, the ratio was 0.99, which suggests that there was about one person about to enter the labour market for each person about to leave it.
