In 2011, Gander (Town) had a population of 11,054, representing a percentage change of 11.1% from 2006. This compares to the national average growth of 5.9%.

Land area is 104.25 square kilometres with a population density of 106.0 persons per square kilometre. This compares to the provincial land area of 370,510.76 square kilometres with a population density of 1.4 persons per square kilometre.

In 2011, Gander (Town) had 4,517 private dwellings occupied by usual residents. The change in private dwellings occupied by usual residents from 2006 was 16.7%. For Canada as a whole, the number of private dwellings occupied by usual residents increased 7.1%.

Families and households

In 2011, the number of census families2 in Gander was 3,390, which represents a change of 10.8% from 2006. This compares to a growth rate for Canada of 5.5% over the same period.


In Gander, 72.4% of census families were married couples in 2011, while 13.9% were common-law-couples and 13.7% were lone-parent families.

Gander – Marital status

In comparison, the provincial / territorial percentages were 97.6% for English only, 0.5% for French only and 1.7% for only non-official languages.

Gander, T – Non-official languages

In Gander, the three most common mother tongues were Arabic (0.3%), Tagalog (Pilipino, Filipino) (0.1%) and Afrikaans (0.1%), in 2011. In comparison, the most common mother tongues at the provincial / territorial level were Innu/Montagnais (0.4%), Chinese, n.o.s. (0.2%) and Inuktitut (0.1%).
