  • In 2016, the enumerated population of Newfoundland and Labrador was 519,716 which represents a change of 1.0% from 2011. This growth was lower than the national rate of 5.0%.
  • In 2016, there were 218,673 private dwellings occupied in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2016 which represent a change of 4.7% from 2011. This growth was lower than the national rate of 5.6%.
  • The land area of Newfoundland and Labrador is 370,514.08 square kilometres and the population density was 1.4 people per square kilometre.

Newfoundland and Labrador – Census metropolitan areas (CMAs), census agglomerations (CAs) and regions outside CMAs and CAs

In 2016, 53.2% of the population of Newfoundland and Labrador lived inside a census metropolitan area (CMA) or census agglomeration (CA). That represents 276,360 persons. This was lower than the national rate of 83.2%.

The number of persons living outside a census metropolitan area (CMA) or a census agglomeration (CA) was 243,356, which accounts for 46.8% of the population. This was higher than the national rate of 16.8%.
