Part B - Detailed definition
Citizenship refers to the legal citizenship status of a person. Citizenship can be by birth or naturalization. A person may have more than one citizenship. A person may be stateless, that is, they may have no citizenship.

  2. Canadian citizens
  3. Canadian citizens by birth Footnote 3
  4. Citizens of Canada by birth only
  5. Citizens of Canada by birth and at least one other country of citizenship
  6. Canadian citizen by naturalisation Footnote 6
  7. Citizens of Canada by naturalisation only
  8. Citizens of Canada by naturalisation and at least one other country of citizenship

'Canadian citizen by birth' refers to persons who had Canadian citizenship at birth under the provisions of Canadian law.

'Canadian citizen by naturalization' refers to persons who were not Canadian citizens at birth but acquired citizenship under the provisions of Canadian law. They are immigrants to Canada who acquired Canadian citizenship through the citizenship application process.
